But what many of our customers may not know is that our story begins across the Atlantic—in a Swedish operating room, not a sports arena.   The roots of SISU trace back to the University of Lund Hospital in Sweden, where Dr. Jan Akervall, Leg. Läkare, Med. Dr., Docent, served as the head of the Head and Neck Cancer Division in Southern Sweden. While working in the operating room, Dr. Akervall recognized a need for dental protection that didn’t sacrifice comfort or performance—an insight that extended beyond the medical field into the world of athletics.   Driven by a passion for innovation and a belief that superior dental protection shouldn’t come at the cost of communication or breathability, Dr. Akervall began developing a new kind of mouthguard. The material he engineered in Sweeden was unlike anything available at the time: thin, tough, and remoldable with precision. The result was a revolutionary mouthguard that offered maximum protection with minimal bulk—a concept that would later become SISU.   After relocating to the United States, Dr. Akervall founded Akervall Technologies Inc. and began manufacturing SISU Mouthguards in Michigan—bringing Swedish innovation to athletes around the world. Today, SISU remains dedicated to advancing protection, performance, and comfort for athletes at every level, from youth leagues to professional sports.   Our story may have started in Sweden, but SISU has become a global symbol of strength, resilience, and smarter protection. From surgical inspiration to sideline staple, SISU Mouthguards are built on a foundation of international expertise and made for athletes of every sport.
